I intend to work on this blog as my "process journal" by keeping track of all of the things I do in order to complete my project. My intentions are to post atleast once a week on Mondays and if anything else comes up I will try to post it on that same day.

Part III: Application Of Information

In order to ensure that we would actually come through with the completion of our project, we set up goals throughout the entire time. We had some trouble with this in the beggining but we were able to get going and once these goals were made official it was easier to track our progress. I had to make a lot of decisions regarding what needed to be planted and the materials we needed to use. We were faced with the difficult task of ensuring we were being productive throughout the entire time we were working on the garden. luckily, we had the advice of Ms, Jaegar and Farmer Justin to help led the way. Thanks to them, we were able to get the problems solved and move on to the next tasks.
As a group, I can say that the techniques we learned form this investigation are basically applicable in more than one area in real life. As a group both Nidia and I would agree that it has thought us how to work on scheduling out event and the planting itself. It took more than one try to get everything right where we wanted, but in the end it all turned out great. Personally, my learning of techniques came down to mostly everything we did for the project. I was a beginner at farming and planting, but I learned that basically this isn't something that takes no work. The planting of each vegetable and fruit have their specific time for fermentation, watering, and harvesting I had to learn to take all of those factors into consideration and come up with a plan that would ensure that my garden would be successful.

Part II: Selection of Sources

I researched different types of resources but i settled for 3 main kinds, printed, online and personal. I did this to provide myself with the necessary information that would insure me accurate and legitimate background information.
I did not really use any printed sources as in books or magazines because my topic did not really require such research. I chose to not use them because most of the information we got was off the internet or Farmer Justin himself. Also, both Nidia and I knew that most of the information would have to be obtained through another mean as our school library is very limiting.
The electronic resources I was able to get were basically websites that helped answer questions regarding the process of the actual planting or harvesting. I decided to use them because they seemed reliable enough and an easy way to to get the information fast. I liked my online resources as they provided information that I needed at the time and it was easy to understand.
So for my resources I think that I have managed to surround myself with people who are willing to help and guide me through this process. The IDEA Farmer and Ms. Jaegar have made themselves available to any questions we might have. Another very important source of information has been the previous person in charge of the maintenance of the garden last year, Sammy. We got some information on the kinds of things we could possibly grow from him and learned about some pesticide and there effects. I decided that these were good resources as they could supply us with their knowledge and past experience. Obviously  some resources were better than others. I found myself relying more and more on the school's farmer by asking him for help and advice. I knew what we had to accomplish, but in the places where we got stuck we were able to use the help of our advisers.
I discarded information through simply updating what I was to accomplish that specific week and work with that information. I changed my information as the projects for the weeks changed periodically. I evaluated my sources with the help of Farmer Justin and with some previous knowledge on planting and gardening.

Paper Outline Part 1: The Goal

 1.   The areas of interaction that are a part of my personal project are community and services and environment because we are working towards remodeling the garden and getting people involved through community service and that way they can help us bring awareness to our school. We will do this by bringing in people who want to help make a difference and learn about the environment/planting. We as a group decided to make this the focus of our project because we felt that our generation wasn't as involved as we wished we were and with our influence, hopefully, the little ones would become interested and follow in out footsteps.

2.   As part of my project I have decided to collaborate with Nidia Cavazos in the task of reconstructing and remodeling the garden at our Idea Campus. We would like to achieve the complicated task of not only planting organic produce at our garden, but also to raise awareness and educate the generations at Idea to make better choices and want to get involved in wanting to make a difference. To be honest, I really did not have any prior knowledge regarding planting or farming, but I found myself very interested in learning about it and the mechanics of it. The way we set up the project we would always be having something to do and that was a perfect opportunity to bring in other students to help out and get community hours and by doing this, helping the environment.

 3. The guiding question I designed for my project was: How can I remodel and replant the organic garden at our school and help raise awareness among the Idea community? My question is not one that requires a simple answer as it is basically made up of two components. The first one would have to be the part that talks about replanting and remodeling the garden. That in itself is a challenge to complete, but we also decided to add the part where we are as a group would help raise awareness in our school which leads me to the second part of this project. The only way these two things will be accomplished is by completing the garden and keeping a consistent interest in the garden even after the project is actually done. The area of interaction can be easily recognized through the work we do in the garden by planting.

 4.  Our ultimate goal is to remodel the garden and through that help bring awareness to the campus as a whole. We will do this by bringing in people who want to help make a difference and want to learn about the environment and planting. By doing this we will ensure that our goal is being met and that we will be successful in the making of our project.

Jan 16-27, 2012

Week of Jan 23:
Last week we also went out to the garden to water the crops and we saw that it was looking good, so we are excited to see the process and how the cilantro, turnips and carrots turn out. We were also looking at the citrus trees we wanted to plant in the other half of the garden, but it turns out that these tress have a plague and we will not be able to plant them. We are already looking at how we will be fixing this little bump on the road; I am positive that we will have a solution and we won't loss time trying to fix it. We were also given the chance to sell after school on report card night and we made about $250. By doing this I think that we will be closer to our goal for the wood and that way we will be able to continue building the raised beds.

January 16-27, 2012

 Week of Jan 16:
So over the course of these last two weeks, we have been able to move forward with the project at an average speed. I was hoping to have more accomplished by this time, but we had some monetary issues and we could not buy all the wood at one time so we had to change our plans. Nidia and I talked to the farmer Justin and decided that maybe we could start with the 6 raised bed we had built already and have two rows of regular planting. We opted for this option because we knew that we would not be able to get money soon and we had to get vegetables planted soon if we wanted to have a harvest. in the end, it all worked out and it turned out to be faster that we had imagined.

The Progress:

So far we have been able to work on the making of 6 raised bed of 28x14x6. Today we went to talk to farmer Justin and he told us that it would be in everyones' best interest to change the dimensions of the bed to perhaps 12in high as we have rabbits and possums that like vegetables.

We plan on adding citrus tress on the other of the small garden and beautify it once we have added the raised beds and are in the process of planting the trees.

This is what it looks like at the moment. Its still a work in process but I feel confident that by the end of April we will have made a bigger accomplishment by completing the garden and have a harvest ready to either donate or sell at the farmers market.

So we have began working on the actual garden with the raised beds, and the plan is to do half of the area with these raised ands and the rest with citrus trees.
